Grantchester Charity Runs: A Brief History

2019 sees the 10th Anniversary Grantchester Charity Runs being held on Sunday, September 29th. The first 10k was run by 30 or so brave souls associated with the newly reformed Grantchester Cricket Club starting from opposite the Blue Ball in Grantchester. 2011 saw the introduction of our (now traditional) post-race bacon baps and commemorative T-shirts, thanks to our long-time sponsor the Lunchtime Company (be sure to wear yours on the 29th!) A 3k was added the next year for families and those wanting a more sedate experience. Our fund raising was formalised when we teamed with the ‘Big Push for the Rosie’ at Addenbrooke’s.

2013 saw the move of the Start/Finish to the newly opened Grantchester Cricket Club ground and a continuation with our partnership with the Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT). We broke the 200-runner mark in 2014 but realised the event had outgrown the route around the village. So, we moved to new routes in Grantchester, eliminating all the road crossings in the process. The East Anglia Children’s Hospice was added as a second charity, then our renowned ‘Family Special’ for the 3k and chip timing were introduced in 2017. Last year, we were joined by the Cambridge Independent and Maggie’s Centre Cambridge, a charity whose teams of cancer support experts are available to anyone affected by cancer, anytime in a warm uplifting environment on the Addenbrooke’s campus. They helped us break the 500 registrants mark and make a record donation to ACT’s Liver Perfusion Machine campaign and Maggie’s.

This year we are again teaming with ACT and Maggie’s and using our predominantly flat 10k and 3k courses through attractive farm- and park- land in Grantchester. The event is run entirely by volunteers from Grantchester and its cricket club and involves no road crossings or closures Plenty of parking is available in the nearby Village Car Park. Commemorative T-shirts are available with all proceeds going to our charities, thanks to generous sponsorship from the Lunchtime Company and HotelResUK. All runners will receive special medals and it is rumoured some additional Anniversary surprises are being planned!

The GCR website has lots of information on previous years and how to register for the 10th Anniversary runs. Early bird rates So have a look round….
